The Museum of Sopot

The Museum of Sopot was founded in 2001 by the Council of the City of Sopot within the celebrations of the Centenary of the City of Sopot. The historic villa, built by Ernst August Claaszen, a Gdansk merchant, in 1903, became the seat of the Museum. The original state of the building with regard to its new museum functions was restored within the work that took place in 2001-2006. The representative rooms at the ground floor present the permanent collection of the historic interiors, recreated in the basis of archival photographs handed to the museum by the daughter of the first owner of the villa, Ruth Koch nee Claaszen in 2001-2003. Current exhibitions are presented in old bedrooms on the first floor; offices and workshops are located in the attic. The old villa basement is now a restaurant. There is an elevator for the disabled access. The work also included a revitalization of the vast garden around the villa and reconstruction of the historic fencing. The Sopot Museum – located just a few meters from the beach in the area extremely attractive to tourists – is a place eagerly visited by the visitors and inhabitants of Sopot and the Tri- City.
